Intro to Hololens

Microsoft HoloLens, the company’s holographic, augmented reality headset, is a bold piece of hardware and the most exciting innovation in wearable tech yet ! Microsoft’s efforts amount to the most impressive device I have had a chance to work with. The Hololens opens up a new path in interaction design and game development. In the following days I’ll try to share my experience in working with HL and the problems that occurred along the way. But first and foremost lets take look at the device and see what’s under the hood that makes it the most impressive wearable tech yet !

As a disclaimer I should point out that this device is not targeting consumer market as of now and is still far from becoming one.

Powering each HoloLens is a 32-bit Intel Atom processor and Microsoft’s custom Holographic Processing Unit, or HPU. Using data generated by an inertial measurement unit, four spatial-mapping cameras, and a depth camera, the HPU creates a 3-D model of the surrounding environment. Apps can then use this model to position holograms without wasting the limited processing capacity of the energy-efficient Atom processor on handling sensor data. (As a Windows 10 device, HoloLens can run most 32-bit-processor-compatible Windows Universal Platform apps, which are available at the Windows Store. Nonholographic applications run as floating virtual screens that you place in your environment.)

By opting for such a specialized co-processor, Microsoft has traded some flexibility for increased power and thermal efficiency. Still, the HoloLens will not be feasible without it. That is because the form factor of a head-mounted computer puts serious constraints on battery size and how much heat can be dissipated without causing discomfort.

Now for the real question. How do the blend the digital and the real ?

The HoloLens display is basically a set of transparent screens placed just in front of the eyes. Each eyepiece or screen lets light through and also shows digital content the way your monitor does. Each screen shows a slightly different image to create a stereoscopic illusion like the View Master toy does or 3D glasses do at 3D movies.

HoloLens hardware specifications include 2GB of RAM, 64GB of flash storage, and bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The bluetooth support allows HoloLens owners to make use of a new Clicker accessory, included in the box, instead of the air tap gestures to navigate around. Microsoft says the entire HoloLens headset will weigh no more than 579 grams, and the battery will run for around two or three hours of active use. HoloLens is fully functional when it’s charged over Micro USB, and the device will also have a standby time of two weeks. It’s a bit disappointing that they didn’t provide Type-C USB ports, but then again this is the first edition of HL.

    Spatial mapping gives hololens the ability to see its surroundings. This even works great outdoors

  4. Spatial Audio

    This creates the feel that you’d want in a truly immersive device. As TIME magazine said : Holograms can be heard, not just seen

  5. Unity for HL

    Opting for such a universal solution to create applications for hololens gives tremendous opportunities for game developers and 3D artists to come around and create awesome interactions for HL

  6. Tele-Presence

    The ability to record and transmit holograms live opens up phenomenal possibilities.
